La Corbata: elección, tejidos y su combinación

Si hay un complemento de la vestimenta masculina que esté más expuesto en todo momento a la vista de todos, ese es la corbata. La corbata que elijas definirá tu personalidad de cara a todos los demás, pero al mismo tiempo, debemos evitar que la corbata se convierta en la protagonista principal de nuestra imagen o que atraiga la atención sobremanera sobre todo nuestro conjunto.

Existen casi infinitos modelos de corbatas, pero dentro de la búsqueda de la elegancia y del vestir clásico, debemos mantener unas constantes a la hora de utilizarlas. Colores más claros y diseños más informales durante la mañana o mientras haya luz solar y colores más oscuros y diseños más sobrios durante la noche. No usar tamaños muy anchos ni muy estrechos, con medidas en su parte más ancha entre los 8 y 9,5 cm. aproximadamente.

En su construcción, la inmensa mayoría de corbatas que nos encontramos habitualmente se realizan de modo sencillo sobre 3 pliegues, siendo algo más elaboradas las de 5 pliegues y mucho más aun las de 7 pliegues, las más artesanales y por ello, de más alto coste. Asimismo existen corbatas con y sin forro, el cual puede estar hecho del mismo tejido que el resto de la corbata o no y que suele ser muy común en la mayoría de corbatas simples o de 3 pliegues.

Tanto de la construcción como del tejido -que ahora veremos en el siguiente párrafo-, en el que esté realizada la corbata, dependerá la caída que esta tenga y su naturalidad y elegancia, junto con el nudo, una vez puesta.

Los tejidos de que están hechas las corbatas también son variados, dependiendo si van a ser llevadas en el verano, como las sedas más ligeras o bien en invierno, como pueden ser las corbatas realizadas en lana, aunque existen muchos tipos de tejidos y modelos, algunos ya mencionados anteriormente, como el Twill, Jacquard, Grenadine, Lino, Lana o Cashmere, Shantung o Donegal,… Y no podemos olvidar por su peculiar construcción, las corbatas regimentales, cuyo elemento principal son las rayas, presentes desde el último cuarto del S.XIX, para diferenciar los diferentes regimientos militares británicos.

En cuanto a su uso, también debemos tener presente a la hora de de su elección el lugar y el motivo a donde vayamos, ya que no será lo mismo una corbata de seda formal para asistir a una reunión o entrevista de trabajo en el mes de Junio, que una corbata de lana gruesa de invierno para ir a pasar un día al campo en el mes de Diciembre.

Por último, recomiendo elegir uno mismo la corbata para cada ocasión y no dejar nunca que te la regalen sin tu elección previa. La corbata es algo muy personal y como antes comenté, define la personalidad de cada uno y será nuestro estado de ánimo y nuestro objetivo al elegirla el que más nos ayuden a decidirnos.

No es aconsejable combinar nunca la corbata con el pañuelo de bolsillo, es algo completamente inadecuado. A mí particularmente me gusta combinarlas con el color de los calcetines, aunque eso es algo muy personal. Si no estás muy seguro de que cual elegir, siempre son más sencillos de combinar los colores lisos tanto en corbatas como en camisas.

Trata de elegir siempre el nudo adecuado para cada ocasión, y que este no quede ni muy apretado, que no te deje disfrutar de ella, ni muy relajado tampoco. Aunque existen infinidad de posibilidades a la hora de hacer un nudo, yo me decanto prácticamente por mi nudo fetiche y preferido, que además de sencillo, siempre es muy elegante, el “four in hand”, conocido también como nudo simple o americano.

Both the construction and the tissues -which we will later see in the next paragraph-, in which the tie is made, will make its fall and its naturalness and elegance, together with the knot you decide.

The tissues that ties are made of are also varied, depending on whether they are going to be used in the summer, such as lighter silks or in winter, such as ties made of wool, although there are many types of fabrics and models, some already mentioned above, such as Twill, Jacquard, Grenadine, Linen, Wool or Cashmere, Shantung or Donegal, … And we cannot forget, due to their peculiar construction, the regimental ties, whose main element are the stripes, present since the last quarter of the 19th century, to differentiate the different British military regiments.

Regarding its use, we must also keep in mind at the time of your choice the place and the reason where we go, since a formal silk tie will not be the same to attend a meeting or job interview in June, than a thick winter woolen tie to spend a day in the country side in December.

Finally, I recommend choosing the tie yourself for each occasion and never letting it be given as a present to you without your choice. The tie is something very personal and, as I mentioned before, it defines the personality of each one and it will be our state of mind and our objective when choosing it that will help us the most in its right election.

It is never advisable to combine the tie with the pocket square, it is completely inappropriate. I particularly like to combine them with the color of the socks, although that is something very personal. If you are not sure which one to choose, it is always easier to combine solid colors in both ties and shirts.

Try to always choose the right knot for each occasion, never too tight, that it does not let you enjoy it, nor is it too relaxed. Although there are infinite possibilities when it comes to tying a knot, I practically opt for my favorite and fetish knot, which in addition to being simple, is always very elegant, the “four in hand”, also known as a simple or american knot.

History of «Fumagalli 1891»

The Fumagalli family began its operations in 1850 and it was not until the end of the 19th century that it began to produce chiffon ties and silk robes at its factory in Via Sirtori 22, Milan, Italy.

Llevo mucho tiempo observando el trabajo de Fumagalli 1891 y en particular sus corbatas, las cuales, son 100% hechas a mano en Italia con gran atención por los detalles, la calidad y el diseño. El pedido que les hice, no tardo más que 24 horas en llegar a su destino, mi casa.

El envoltorio es más que correcto, es una caja sencilla, bien rotulada con los anagramas de la empresa y que le da un toque distintivo y por qué no, elegante. En su interior el cuidado por el producto, la corbata, es delicado, cubierta por un papel de gasa en 3 pliegues y acompañado de una carta personalizada presentando la empresa y el producto, además de una tarjeta de visita de su propietario y toda la documentación necesaria para el caso de una posible devolución, lo cual facilita de manera sencilla, la atención personalizada al cliente y su servicio post venta, y es de agradecer.

Y vamos con el modelo en cuestión, es una corbata Jacquard azul hecha a mano con un particular patrón de cachemira marrón claro que proviene de los archivos históricos de Fumagalli 1891. Esta corbata tiene una construcción de 3 pliegues y posee un ancho máximo de 8 cm. Como todas las corbatas Fumagalli, está cosida a mano en Italia por artesanos especializados y su lazo de seguridad está cosido a mano externamente.

Os muestro algunas fotos de la misma, con un nudo «four in hand», mi favorito y el que suelo llevar siempre, con mi particular versión del mismo y mis pequeños ajustes o variaciones.

Y algunas fotos más, ya con la corbata enlazada sobre mi cuello, como la podría llevar cualquier día de trabajo, y aunque en estas fechas y por las altas temperaturas de donde resido, suelo no llevar chaqueta en los meses de verano así como a principios del otoño y finales de la primavera, (me la puse para el reportaje), si llevo a diario corbata, aunque no es algo que me guste estéticamente, ya que la chaqueta no debe quitarse nunca, ni para sentarse a la mesa a comer, a una mesa de trabajo o en ninguna otra situación, en mi caso concreto, no es que me la quite, es que no la llevo puesta a diario por las altas temperaturas en donde vivo y porque debo pasar la mayor parte del día en exteriores, sin climatización, lo cual hace inviable su uso, como en la mayoría de países tropicales.

Como podéis ver, aunque sea una corbata Fumagalli 1891 3 folds o de solo 3 pliegues, los exquisitos materiales con que está hecha, así como su realización a mano, le confieren una prestancia, así como una caída realmente bonita y transmite la sensación de ser un artículo exclusivo, aunque su precio sea bastante correcto y asequible para el común de los mortales y en relación a la calidad ofrecida.

I have been observing the work of Fumagalli 1891 for a long time and in particular its ties, which are 100% handmade in Italy with great attention to detail, quality and design. The order that I made them, it took no more than 24 hours to reach its destination, my home.

The packaging is more than correct, it is a simple box, well labeled with the company’s anagrams and that gives it a distinctive touch and why not, elegant. Inside, the care for the product, the tie, is careful, covered by gauze paper in 3 folds and accompanied by a personalized letter presenting the company and the product, as well as a business card from its owner and all the necessary documentation for the case of a possible return back, which facilitates in a simple way, the personalized attention to the client and its after-sales service, and it is to be appreciated.

So let’s go with the tie model in question, it is a handmade blue Jacquard tie with a particular light brown cashmere pattern that comes from the historical archives of Fumagalli 1891. This tie has a 3-fold construction and has a maximum width of 8 cm. Like all Fumagalli ties, it is hand-sewn in Italy by specialized artisans and its security loop is externally hand-sewn.

I show you some photos of the tie, with a «four in hand» knot, my favorite one and almost the only one I always wear, with my particular version of it and my little adjustments or variations.

And some more photos, already with the tie around my neck, as I could wear it any day of work, and although at this time and due to the high temperatures where I live, I usually don’t wear a jacket in the summer as well as early fall and end spring, (I wore it for the report), I wear a tie daily, although it is not something that I like aesthetically, since the jacket should never be removed, not even to sit at the table to eat, to a work table or in any other situation, in my specific case, it’s not that I take it off, it’s that I don’t wear it every day due to the high temperatures where I live and because I have to spend most of the day outdoors, without air conditioning, which makes its use unfeasible, as in most tropical countries.

As you can see, even if it is a Fumagalli 1891 3-folds tie, the exquisite materials with which it is made, as well as its creation by hand, give it an elegance, as well as a really beautiful fall and transmits the feeling of being an exclusive article, although its price is quite correct and affordable for ordinary mortals and in relation to the quality offered.
