Sus principales ciudades son Houmt Souk, Midoun y Agir, por este orden, y está dedicada casi en exclusiva al turismo, no en vano tiene más de 100 hoteles, es su mayoría llenos de turistas europeos de casi todas las nacionalidades y en menor medida a la pesca y la artesanía local.

Its main cities are Houmt Souk, Midoun and Agir, in this order, and it is dedicated almost exclusively to tourism, not surprisingly it has more than 100 hotels, it is mostly full of European tourists of almost all nationalities and to a lesser extent to fishing and local crafts.

Djerba tiene un clima bastante cálido con temperaturas medias que rondan los 20 grados la mayor parte del año, aunque con 2 temporadas diferenciadas. De marzo a Noviembre es tiempo de playa, con temperaturas que no suelen bajar de los 25 grados y en verano se sobrepasan los 40 a diario. Por el contrario los meses de invierno, las temperaturas son algo más suaves, con máximas y mínimas entre los 10-12 y los 20-22 grados.

En Djerba conviven 3 culturas de forma pacífica o tranquila, la árabe, la principal, la judía, la más antigua y la cristiana, la menos numerosa.

Existen más de 100 mezquitas en la isla y sus seguidores son muy devotos, incluso la mayoría de jóvenes, en comparación con el norte del país. La Sinagoga judía «Synagogue de la Ghriba» data del siglo VI a.C. y es objeto de peregrinación anual, durante la fiesta judía de Lag Baomer, que reúne a varios miles de peregrinos. Esta situada cerca de Houmt Souk y es la más antigua del mundo fuera de Israel. Cierra los Sábados, día santo para los judios y es una visita obligada si vienes a Djerba. Existe una pequeña iglesia cristiana en el centro de Houmt Souk, para sus pocos feligreses en la isla.

Djerba has a fairly warm climate with average temperatures of around 20 degrees most of the year, although with 2 different seasons. From March to November it is beach time, with temperatures that do not usually drop below 25 degrees and in summer they exceed 40 daily. By contrast, in the winter months, temperatures are somewhat colder, with highs and lows between 10-12 and 20-22 degrees.

In Djerba 3 cultures coexist peacefully or calmly, the Arab, the main, the Jewish, the oldest and the Christian, the least numerous.

There are more than 100 mosques on the island and their followers are very devoted, even the majority of young people, compared to the north of the country. The Jewish Synagogue «Synagogue de la Ghriba» dates from the 6th century BC., and it is object of an annual pilgrimage, during the Jewish festival of Lag Baomer, which brings together several thousand pilgrims. It is located near Houmt Souk and is the oldest one in the world outside of Israel. It is closed on Saturdays, a holy day for the Jews and is a must if you come to Djerba. There is a small Christian church in the center of Houmt Souk, for its few parishioners on the island.

Djerba tiene playas espectaculares de aguas turquesas y temperaturas que en los meses de julio y agosto llegan a sobrepasar los 50 grados. En esos meses es una gozada ir a bañarse a medianoche, cuando la mayoría de las playas están, como es normal, desiertas y frente a los hoteles, perfectamente iluminadas y protegidas con personal de seguridad.

De entre sus numerosas playas, destacaré la de Yati, frente al hotel Iberostar Mehari Djerba, la zona de la laguna, con muy pocos turistas y las playas de la isla de los flamencos.

Djerba has spectacular beaches with turquoise waters and temperatures that in July and August exceed 50 degrees. In those months it is awesome to go bathing at midnight, when most of the beaches are, as usual, deserted and in front of the hotels, perfectly illuminated and protected by security personnel.

Among its many beaches, I will highlight Yati, in front of the Iberostar Mehari Djerba hotel, the lagoon area, with very few tourists and the beaches of the island of flamingos.

La isla de los flamencos es una lengua de tierra o península que se introduce en el mar Mediterráneo, donde se puede llegar en coche recorriendo numerosas playas desiertas o en barco pirata, desde la marina de Houmt Souk, con salidas a diario en los meses de más turismo, viaje el cual no recomiendo, por carecer de interés, la verdad.

The island of flamingos is a tongue of land or peninsula that enters the Mediterranean Sea, where it can be reached by car through numerous deserted beaches or by pirate ship, from the Houmt Souk marina, with departures daily in the months of more tourism, a trip which I do not recommend, for lack of interest, honestly.

Otro lugar de obligada visita es el barrio de DjerbaHood, en Houmt Souk, donde hace 5 años se produjo un congreso mundial de grafiteros, los cuales dejaron plasmados sus trabajos en las blancas paredes a lo largo de las calles quedando un paisaje singular. Lastima que no está debidamente cuidado y se están perdiendo la mayoría de las pinturas.

Another must-see is the DjerbaHood neighborhood, in Houmt Souk, where 5 years ago there was a world meeting of graffiti artists, who left their works on the white walls along the streets, leaving a unique landscape. Too bad it is not properly cared for and most of the paintings are being lost.

También junto a Houmt Souk, podéis visitar el fuerte Borj el Kebir, Castillo español del siglo XII, donde en 1560 los turcos pasaron a cuchillo a 6000 soldados españoles. Sus cráneos fueron colgados a la vista de todos frente a la costa como recordatorio y advertencia durante más de 300 años para que nadie osara desafiarles de nuevo…

Also next to the Houmt souk, you can visit Borj el Kebir Fort, a 12th century Spanish castle, where in 1560 the Turks attacked 6,000 Spanish soldiers. Their skulls were hung in plain view of the shoreline as a reminder and warning for over 300 years so that no one dared to challenge them again…

El Museo de artes y costumbres populares de Djerba se llama Guellala y en el puedes aprender un poquito de historia sobre la isla y las tradiciones de sus gentes. Es una visita interesante.

The Djerba Museum of Popular Arts and Customs is called Guellala and in it you can learn a little bit of history about the island and the traditions of its people. It is an interesting visit.

Existe un mercado ambulante tanto en las calles de Houmt Souk como en Midoun, pero no hay nada realmente interesante, más allá de ropas viejas y poco más. Para hacer algunas compras, lo mejor es acercarse al centro de Houmt Souk donde hay numerosas tiendas de artesanía local, algún anticuario y alguna galería de pintura, y muchas joyerías regentadas en su mayoría por judíos (la de mi amigo Bijoux – Joaillier, con muy buena relacion calidad precio, sobre todo en articulos de plata), todas con precios bastante asequibles en comparación a Europa, aunque siempre sea necesario regatear. Eso si, absolutamente todas con dos dedos de polvo por todos lados…

There is a street market in both Houmt Souk and Midoun, but there is nothing really interesting, beyond old clothes and little else. For some shopping, it is best to go to the center of Houmt Souk where there are numerous local craft shops, antique shops, painting galleries and many jewelers run mostly by jews (my friend Bijoux-Joaillier’s, with very good value for money, especially in silver items), all with fairly affordable prices compared to Europe, although it is always necessary to haggle. Of course, absolutely all with two fingers of dust everywhere…

Existen 2 centros comerciales o Malls en Djerba, Carrefour y Bourgou Mall o Giant, este último recién abierto y con alguna tienda de referencia como Decathlon, pero con poco interés si no quieres visitar sus supermercados.

Pueden hacerse algunas actividades en la isla, entre las que destacan el paseo en camello por la playa, los quads con diversas rutas y circuitos interesantes y submarinismo a través de diversos centros a lo largo de toda la isla, de los cuales recomiendo el situado junto a la playa del hotel Iberostar Mehari Djerba de mi amigo Munir. Para los amantes del golf, podéis disfrutar del Djerba Golf Club de 27 hoyos, donde por un precio económico podréis practicar vuestro deporte favorito junto al mar. Y algo que cada día me gusta más, pasear en bicicleta de montaña a lo largo de la isla, siempre estando muy pendientes, ya que aquí conducen sabedores de que no existen las multas ni el respeto a las señales de tráfico, nadie lleva cinturón, ni respetan los pasos de peatones, ni las líneas continuas, semáforos…y con la venia de la policía.

There are 2 shopping centers or Malls in Djerba, Carrefour and Bourgou Mall or Giant, the latter recently opened and with a reference store such as Decathlon, but with little interest if you do not want to visit its supermarkets.

Some activities can be done on the island, among which are the camel ride by the beach, quads with various routes and interesting circuits and scuba diving through various centers throughout the island, of which I recommend the one located next to to the beach of hotel Iberostar Mehari Djerba, ruled by my friend Munir. For golf lovers, you can enjoy the 27-hole Djerba Golf Club, where for an economical price you can practice your favorite sport by the sea. And something that I like more every day, riding my mountain bike along the island, always being very aware, since here they drive knowing that there are no fines or respect for traffic signs, nobody is wearing a belt, they do not respect pedestrian crossings, or the continuous lines, traffic lights … and with the permission of the police.

Si te apetece salir por la noche a tomarte una copa, a parte de poder ir a hoteles como el Radisson Blue Palace 5* con unas camas balinesas muy cómodas y una música agradable, aunque lleno de turistas rusos, puedes ir también al Djerba Golf Club, a Sunset Djerba junto a la playa y donde suelen poner el fútbol en directo, a Ze Mess, en su planta alta, pequeño bar con acento jamaicano junto al hotel Dar Ali y si prefieres alguna disco, pues Texas o Desperado hacen las delicias de los que gustan de bailar hasta altas horas y Ciclon para los mas cañeros. Ultimamente estan de moda Vintage y Cocoun con musica en directo algunos días. Los que os esteis preguntando por la seguridad, os diré que Djerba es una isla muy segura, donde puedes encontrar taxis en casi cualquier sitio y a cualquier hora del día y la noche. Recomendación: quedaros con el teléfono del taxista que os parezca agradable y tenga un coche medio decente (es decir, medio limpio y con aire acondicionado, puedo haber visto 3-4 en 2 años…) y llamándolo con antelación, os llevará de un lado a otro cuando necesitéis y además los precios son baratísimos, con trayectos de 5 minutos por 1€.

Si estás cansado del buffet de tu hotel de pulserita todo incluido y te apetece cambiar de aires y comerte un pescado, debes ir a Haroum en la marina de Houmt Souk, restaurante con forma de barco con una terraza muy agradable, donde eso si, debes reservar para asegurarte una mesa o si hace bueno, en Chez Ali (Adel) junto a la playa en la zona de la laguna, lo mas parecido a un chiringuito andaluz que podreis encontrar. Si paráis en cualquier lugar a beberos un tentempié, El Fondouk en Houmt Souk es buen sitio, (aunque lleva en obras no se cuantos meses ya…) probad el té a la menta tunecino, lo hacen muy rico y eso que yo siempre fui más de café, aunque tratar de no fijaros mucho en los detalles de limpieza de la vajilla, mobiliario o local donde os lo pongan, que lo que no engorda no mata, dicen por mi tierra…

Those of you who are wondering about security, I will tell you that Djerba is a very safe island, where you can find taxis almost anywhere and at any time of day and night. Recommendation: stay with the taxi driver’s phone that seems nice and has a half decent car (that is, half clean and with air conditioning, I have seen 3-4 in 2 years…) and calling him in advance, will take you from one side to another when you need and also the prices are very cheap, with trips of 5 minutes for € 1.

If you are tired of the buffet of your all-inclusive bracelet hotel and you want to change the air and eat some fresh fish, you should go to Haroum in the marina of Houmt Souk, a boat-shaped restaurant with a very nice terrace, where you should book to ensure a table or if the weather is fine, in Chez Ali (Adel) next to the beach in the Lagoon area, the closest place to an Andalusian beach bar you can find here. If you want to stop anywhere to have a snack, El Fondouk in Houmt Souk is a good place, (although it´s under renovation since last year …) try the Tunisian mint tea, they make it very taste, although trying not to pay much attention to the cleaning details of the glasses, furniture or the place where they put it, what does not make you fat does not kill, they say at home …

Las gentes de Djerba son bastante agradables por norma general y confiados de los turistas. Pero ojo, que también hay mucho listo que te dirá si vas de visita a alguna ciudad (viendo tu pulserita) que trabaja en tu hotel y quiere acompañarte para enseñarte la ciudad, cuando en realidad solo quiere sacarse alguna comisión llevándote a alguna tienda a que compres algo.

Djerba tiene algo más de 20 conexiones aéreas a día de hoy que funcionan durante todo el año. Es decir, no está muy bien conectada y no tiene vuelos con España, por lo que para llegar hasta aquí, es necesario hacer escala, bien en Túnez capital, bien en alguna ciudad europea. Estas que os dejo mas abajo son las principales, aunque hay algunas más como Munich, Frankfurt o Niza.

The people of Djerba are generally quite nice and trustful of tourists. But beware, there is also some of them ready to ask you if you are visiting the city (seeing your wristband) that he works at your hotel and wants to accompany you to show you around the city, when in reality they only want to earn a commission by taking you to a store where buy something.

Djerba has just over 20 air connections today that operate throughout the year. In other words, it is not very well connected and does not have flights with Spain, so to get here, it is necessary to stop over, either in the Tunisian capital or in some European city. Y hasta aquí mi aventura en la isla de Djerba, isla de los sueños, a donde llego Ulises en su viaje a Itaca y quedo prendado por sus playas y por la flor de loto y donde cayó bajo un sueño eterno y de donde nunca, dice la historia, quiso marcharse.

Lugar para el descanso tanto físico como mental, a escasas 2-3 horas del centro de Europa en avión y con una relación calidad precio muy interesante, sobre todo en los meses fuera de Julio y Agosto. Una visita a Túnez, necesita una visita ineludible tanto a la isla de Djerba como una excursión al cercano desierto del Sahara. Place for both physical and mental rest, just 2-3 hours from central Europe by plane and with a very interesting value for money, especially in the months outside of July and August. A visit to Tunisia requires an inescapable visit to both the island of Djerba and an excursion to the nearby Sahara desert.
